Moving with Kids: Lessons from My Own Family's Big Move

Moving with Kids: Lessons from My Own Family's Big Move

  • 05/1/25

After 17 wonderful years in our family home, a cozy brick bungalow in the Highlands and the only home our kids have ever known, we recently made a move to a new home in a new neighborhood—and let me tell you, even as a Realtor, moving with kids (mine ages 9 & 11) is a big deal! Experiencing it firsthand reminded me just how emotional and exciting a fresh start can be, and it gave me a few great tips I love sharing with my clients.

Involve Your Kids Early
Letting our kids help pack some of their own things gave them a real sense of ownership in the move. They loved deciding what to keep, what to donate, and what “special items” needed their own boxes.

Give Them a Voice in Their New Space
When we arrived at the new house, one of the first things we did was let each child choose their own paint colors and decor for their rooms. It helped the new space feel like theirs right away—and made the transition feel a little more exciting than scary. We also visited the house several times before we moved in so they could spend time there.

Get to Know the Neighborhood—Together
Exploring the new area on foot and by bike was a game-changer for us. We found the best route to the neighborhood park, hiking trails, and nearby restaurants. Little discoveries made a big difference in building excitement and comfort.

Whether you’re moving across town or across the country, a little extra time and attention goes a long way toward helping kids feel like the adventure is theirs, too. If you're thinking about a move and want tips tailored to your family’s needs, I’d love to help. Reach out and let's connect!
